First Grade Curriculum Goals

Rhythm
1. Review durations equivalent to length of beat in speech and movement, on body percussion and instruments.
2. Review responses to various tempos in movement, speech, song, and body percussion.
3. Review ‘fast,’ ‘slow,’ faster,’ ‘slower.’ Use to identify tempo changes.
4. Discover and identify quarter note and quarter rest (silent beat) through speech and song.
5. Identify repeated pattern as ostinato.
6. Perform, read, and write patterns containing quarter notes and rests.
7. Use speech as means to transfer words to rhythm and to distinguish beat from rhythm.
8. Perform, clap and play patterns using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.
9.  Identify and perform patterns with metric accents.
10. Write 4-beat patterns from dictation, using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.
11. Respond appropriately to meters: march/walk to 2/4,/4/4; swing to 3/4; gallop to 6/8.
12.  Aurally identify and perform half notes.

Pitch
1. Extend awareness of pitch by exploring expressive speech.
2. Identify melodic contour as moving upwards, downwards, or repeating pitches.
3. Identify two pitches in chants as higher and lower. Then ID as sol-mi with gestures, hand signs, vocally (using solfege syllables), and on instruments.
4. Identify three pitches in chants as high, middle, low. Then ID as la-sol-mi with gestures, hand signs, vocally (using solfege syllables), and on instruments.
5. Identify three pitches in chants as high, middle, low. Then ID as mi-re-do with gestures, hand signs, vocally (using solfege syllables), and on instruments.
6.  Label and read pitches using iconic notation on 2-line staff.
7. Sing chants and pentatonic songs with simple ostinato accompaniments.
